Coin Sustainability at The Silk Road Conference

Currency Research will be holding the inaugural Silk Road Cash & Payments Conference in Almaty from 27-29 March.

This new initiative, co-hosted with the National Bank of Kazakhstan, is bringing together central banks and regulators from across Central Asia (as well as the wider Asia, Africa and European regions) from the cash and payments industries for two and half days of education, networking and social activities.

The event will be opened by Governor Galymzhan Pirmatov of the National Bank of Kazakhstan before splitting into a dual track format – with one track focusing on cash and one track focusing on payments.

In all around 45 speakers will be presenting throughout the event, which also includes two pre-conference workshops.

Session 4 will be of particular interest to mints, as it will focus on the sustainability – both environmental and business – of circulating coins. Rosidi Mohd Yunus of Bank Negara Malaysia will speak on ‘Construction Stage Issues and ACC Security & Business Continuity Concepts’, whilst Aziya Ibrayeva of the Kazakhstan Mint will present on the topic of ‘Sustainability of the Kazakhstan Mint’. Sirpa Kuusirati of the Mint of Finland will talk about improving the environmental impact of blank manufacturing and coin minting, which includes discussing the Mint’s focus areas of environmental responsibility, improvement actions implemented, achievements gained, and challenges identified.
